Position Overview

The Assistant Athletic Coach will support the Head Athletic Coach in the development and execution of athletic programs. This role is critical in fostering the physical, emotional, and social development of student-athletes. The Assistant Coach will help create a positive and competitive environment emphasizing skill development, teamwork, and respect for the game.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Skill Instruction : Assist in instructing and demonstrating skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement across practices and games.
• Training Program Development : Collaborate with the Head Coach to develop appropriate training programs and practice schedules to optimize athlete performance.
• Game Strategy Implementation : Participate in creating and executing game/meet strategies, emphasizing technical fundamentals and tactical understanding.
• Equipment Maintenance : Ensure the proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms. Maintain updated inventories of all equipment.
• Record Keeping : Maintain necessary records related to student-athlete attendance and performance and complete required paperwork in a timely manner.
• Medical Compliance : Ensure that all required medical forms are obtained and current for each student athlete.
• Supervision : Supervise student-athletes during home and away games, practices, and other team activities to ensure appropriate behavior and sportsmanship.
• Reporting : Submit completed injury reports to the Athletic Director, School Leader, and School Nurse promptly following any incidents.
• Communication : Communicate and collaborate effectively with the families of student-athletes, providing updates and addressing concerns.
• Policy Enforcement : Enforce all school policies during practices and games, both at home and while traveling.
• Transportation Coordination : Share in the responsibility for providing transportation for athletes to away games/meets or off-site practices using a provided vehicle (small or large bus) while ensuring supervision and safety.

• Complies with all charter, federal, state, and local laws, and regulations, including the NYS Department of Education, Department of Health, and NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
• Adheres to organization policies and procedures; promotes and supports mission, vision, and values, including developing and participating in internal surveys and data collection for continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma/GED required. Bachelor’s degree in Education, Sports Management, Kinesiology, from an accredited College or University or a related field is preferred.
• Previous coaching experience in the designated sport at the middle/high school, collegiate, or community level.
• Possession of a valid NYSPHSAA coaching certification, First Aid, CPR, and AED certification, or willingness to obtain certification through required training upon hire.
• Experience working directly with students, preferably required in the charter, private, or public school environment.
• Prior experience working in schools and urban communities is preferred but not required.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule outside of regular business hours.
• Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.
• If currently employed at KIPP Capital Region Schools, applicant must be in good standing.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, potentially for the duration of practices and games, and to move around the playing field or court. Bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing stairs may also be required.
• Must be able to engage in physical activities, including demonstrating skills and drills, and actively participating in practices and games.
• Endurance for prolonged standing and physical activity.
• Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
• Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee needs to read, write, and speak English fluently.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use fingers to type, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance; stoop/bend and reach, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear.
• Dexterity requires writing and operating standard office machines such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, and calculators.
• Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.

Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP Capital Region will evaluate and determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale at point of hire.
