Position Announcement Proposed Start Date: 05/01/2025 Classification Title: Rank N - No Rank Working Title: Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine Department: 630301 - ATH Trainer's Office Position Number: D97197 Representation: UU - Unclassified Unrepresented Renewable: Renewable Position FTE: 1.0 Tenure Status: N - not applicable Position Summary The Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine provides strategic leadership, administrative oversight, and supervision of the sports medicine department and programs for Portland State University Athletics. The position oversees all aspects of health, safety, and wellness for student athletes at PSU; serving as a liaison to mental health and counseling services in conjunction with the Athletics Mental Health Therapist. The primary responsibilities include supervision and oversight of clinical services, and formulating policies and procedures to ensure both medical and ethical standards are delivered legally and efficiently in accordance with PSU’s, NCAA’s, and the Big Sky Conference policies and guidelines. Minimum Qualifications Must be competent in evidence-based clinical skills as well as cognitive and interpersonal skills. Experience and interest in supporting and empowering individuals from underrepresented and marginalized communities. A solid understanding of boundaries and professional ethics. Ability to problem-solve, handle sensitive information, and nuanced situations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary interdepartmental team. Highly organized and detail-oriented to handle multiple projects and deadlines. Able to communicate effectively, and build rapport quickly with students, coaches, and staff. Demonstrate ability to work well with a diverse group of clients. Collaborate to meet the dynamic needs of our student-athletes and sport programs. Committed to confidentiality regulated by university, state, and federal rules and regulations. Proficiency in addressing all aspects of students’ intersecting identities. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing organizational standards to improve the health, well-being, and overall performance of elite athletes. Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or associated field of study. Eligible for Oregon Licensure or license in good standing required. Experience with college student-athletes. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of full-time clinical experience as a Head or Assistant Athletic Trainer at a college, university, or professional sport organization. Strong knowledge of athletic training principles, injury prevention strategies, rehabilitation protocols, strength and conditioning techniques, nutrition guidelines, and mental health best practices. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse and fast-paced environment. Commitment to promoting a culture of high performance, student athlete wellness, optimal sports performance, and excellence among student-athletes. Work Days/Hours Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be between $63,792 – $74,165, but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR. An excellent benefits package includes 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon University System schools.
