Job Title: Accompanist/Organist

Salary/Wage: $22-24 an hour / Based on experience and education;
Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation including 2 Sundays per year (not taken during Holy Week or Christmas)

Position Type: Part Time, up to 10 - 12 hours per week on average

  • It is anticipated that during high holy weeks (Holy Week and Christmas) there will be extra hours needed
  • Anticipated reduced hours over summer months (June – August)

MUSIC MINISTRY VISION

The vision for music at Cross of Christ is to touch the hearts of our congregation with the spirit of God through meaningful worship music. As Christian music continues to evolve, we want to blend our rich Lutheran music traditions with contemporary music in a way that ignites our spirits.

Role and Responsibilities

Weekly Worship

o Support a music ministry that is spiritually impactful to all members and guests.

o Provide piano/organ music for Sunday morning worship including prelude, postlude, communion and offertory (when needed) and is appropriate to the season and theme of worship for that Sunday

o Accompany hymns, liturgy, ensembles, and soloists as planned and requested

o Accompany rehearsals for special music and ensembles as needed

o Accompany weekly rehearsals – Choir (Late August – May) and Praise Band (Year around)

o Attend meetings with the Director of Music Ministry as requested.

o Collaborate and communicate with the Director of Music Ministry and Praise Band Leader for weekly special music

o Submit music offerings to office staff for timely bulletin deadlines.

Other Responsibilities

o Communicate with the Director of Music Ministry at least two weeks before a planned absence to give time for a substitute.

o Perform additional duties as directed by the Director of Music Ministry and Lead Pastor.

o Dress appropriately for worship and present themselves in behavior conducive to worship leadership.

WORSHIP SERVICES AT WHICH THE ACCOMPANIST IS EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE

o Sunday morning worship

o Ash Wednesday Services

o Wednesday Evening Worship during the season of Lent

o Holy Week services (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday)

o Multiple services on Easter Sunday and Christmas Eve

o Other special congregational events in which the accompanist is requested to participate.

Job performance review conducted annually by the Lead Pastor, Director of Music Ministry and a member of the Executive Council.

Accompanist/Organist will be given first right of refusal for weddings/funerals.

30 days written notice requested in the event of voluntary termination.

Required Qualifications

  • A personal faith commitment to Christ.·
  • Professional level of piano and organ skills to collaborate and accompany for a wide range of styles.·
  • Ability and energy around leading a variety of styles of music in worship·
  • Flexibility and adaptability·
  • Experience and competency in sight-reading, lead sheets, etc. Willingness to learn and improve in this skill
  • Ability to choose music that is appropriate for worship in each liturgical season
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, Director of Music Ministry, and congregation members including being open to feedback and input on music selection.
  • Combination of experience or education equivalent to the successful completion of Bachelor’s degree in music. ·
  • Abide by policies in the Employee Handbook, including Safe Haven Guidelines
  • Pass fingerprint and background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • High level of organizational skills·
  • Experience/Knowledge of liturgical worship and church year cycle.·
  • Improvisational skills
  • Experience as a church musician
