Golf Course Superintendent

The successful Superintendent candidate will understand and oversee every aspect of the agronomy operation and will thrive in a can-do environment and be highly focused on providing superior course conditions for members and their guests, while optimizing the department's financial performance. Advancing robust technical agronomy plans and cultural practices will require a hands-on approach and careful guidance. Optimizing the employee culture, capital planning and committee communications ranks high in importance. But mostly, this person gets his/her energy from creating a culture of hospitality, where training and accountability are front and center, and is focused in providing inspired leadership, and truly committed to activating the processes and solutions to provide unmatched course conditions for members and associates.

The most suitable individual selected for this role will have a critical eye for detail, deliver large doses of hands-on leadership, inspire all associates to be the best version of themselves, drive pride in ownership, have a high level of stamina, have a Bachelor's Degree in Turf Science and at least 7 years in agronomy management and/or related experience and should also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, verbally and written in this highly interactive and engaging position.

Contra Costa Country Club is an 18-hole golf course with 10+ million dollars revenue. As Golf Course Superintendent, you are responsible for the upkeep and care of the 135+ acre property to the established standards of Contra Costa Country Club and Troon Prive'.

The golf course is 87 acres of irrigated turfgrass that is maintained with 100% reclaimed water. Greens surfaces are 007/Tyee Bentgrass with all other surfaces being maintained as perennial ryegrass.

Essential Duties:

• Prepares and maintains the annual golf course maintenance budget and capital plans.
• Plans, organizes and directs the maintenance and construction of putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, natives and bunkers.
• Supervises the planting and cultural practices involved in growing various turfgrasses, trees and ornamental plants to include bentgrass and ryegrass.
• Ensures that maintenance equipment is properly maintained and procured.
• Procures supplies and materials within scope of operating and capital budget plans.
• Keep records of annual maintenance activities and costs. Prepares reports for distribution to committees and General Manager.
• Implements sound purchasing procedures utilizing preferred vendors, when possible.
• Reconciles and provides timely coding of all invoices, payroll, inventory, and other required documents.
• Ensures all company policies and procedures are followed including compliance with government regulations.
• Ensures that they and all associates obtain proper training and/or licenses needed to perform job tasks safely and within city, state, and federal regulations. Addresses directly all real or perceived environmental concerns.
• Ensures proper mixing, calibration, and application of all chemical/fertilizers used on the course.
• Manages department members that may include, but is not limited to: Assistant Superintendent, 2nd Assistant Superintendent, Head Mechanic, Foreman, Greenskeeper, and Irrigation Technician.
• Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new associate. Develops ongoing training programs.
• Regular and reliable attendance.
• Incorporates safe work practices in job performance.
• Conducts Green Committee Meetings in conjunction with Green Committee Chairman and General Manager.
• Involved in other committees such as Finance and Golf as needed.

Education/Experience:

Associate's degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (Degree in agronomy/ horticulture/ plant/soil science).

Physical Demands:

Regularly stands, walks and sits. Regularly uses hands, reaches with arms and hands, talks or hears. Occasionally climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, tastes or smells. Regularly lifts up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts up to 100 pounds.

Environment/Noise:

Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, fumes and/or airborne particles. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. Noise level is moderate.

Certificates/Licenses:

Valid Driver's License, Pesticide Application License

Job Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Preferences:

• Bentgrass putting greens management and practices to control Poa annua expansion.
• Controlling warm season grass populations to ensure a monostand of perennial ryegrass.
• Understanding of reclaimed water management practices.
• Ability to read and speak English is required in order to perform the duties of the job (e.g. the associates are required to communicate with English speaking customers or co-workers, the manuals for the equipment the associates may use are in English).
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
