Library Technical Services Assistant

Chatham University welcomes applications for the position of Technical Services Assistant in our Library.

This is a professional and highly focused position, assisting with library acquisitions and cataloging in all formats, including bibliographic searching; ordering; receiving; claiming; invoice processing; cataloging, serials, processing materials, web presence, database development, workflow training, and knowledge of integrated library systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists with all Technical Services operations involving acquisitions, cataloging, serials, repairs, stack maintenance and electronic resource linking.
  • Generates data reports utilizing Microsoft applications (Excel, VB) and MarcEdit, in preparation of statistical reports, library materials financial reports, collection analysis documents, and narrative reports, as assigned.
  • Participates in archives processing (student publications, chapbooks, ephemera) and gift intake. Also tests and assures the proper cataloging and export functions in the ILS, and other local or remote databases.
  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging of library materials in all formats; such as foreign language, maps, music, serials, and archival. Provides training opportunities to keep Technical Services staff up to date on current and future cataloging formats and standards.
  • Maintains the presence of the OPAC and other live web sites, performing complex adjustments where needed for dynamic web interfaces.
  • Participates in Reference Desk coverage as assigned and needed.
  • Enhances personal development by reading professional publications and literature, participating in appropriate online forums, and engaging in relevant training offered on and off campus and via the web. Attends professional conferences, training, seminars, and other meetings as needed.
  • Provide on-call support for system and data-related network problems.
  • Participates in the transition from print serials to alternate formats.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of the principles and practices of technical administration as applied to a mid-sized private academic urban library.
  • Good ability to make decisions in an environment of limited resources and competing claims.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of academic library.
  • Thorough knowledge of contemporary bibliographic- maintenance standards and practice, including RDA rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress subject headings, OCLC/MARC records, and library automation.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; ability to learn and use the online library database.
  • Ability to organize and complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Ability to use general office software; ability to perform work requiring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with staff, patrons, and others; ability to operate a variety of office equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited.
  • Substantial knowledge of applications, standards and languages: Koha ILS, Adobe Professional, MarcEdit, BIBFRAME, MARC, RDA, AACR2r, LCSH, DEWEY, OCLC, EDS, 50, HTML, UNIX, FTP, XML, C++, Visual Basic, Python, PHP, SQL and other relational database structures.
  • Knowledge of best practices, trends, and standards in all operations of technical services in an academic library setting.
  • Ability to learn new computer languages and data standards as they are applicable to present and future holdings, as well as retain working knowledge of past Participate actively in research of future systems as they may impact present and future holdings.

Salary:

This position will be filled at the hourly rate of $16.00.
