Position : 988 Crisis Counselor
Reports to : Host Site Supervisor

We’re on a mission to provide accessible mental health care for all, and one of the most crucial aspects of this mission is our partnership with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline . We're looking for passionate individuals to join us as 988 Crisis Counselors to help those in crisis navigate their most difficult moments.

Your Mission:

As an AmeriCorps Member serving as a 988 Crisis Counselor , you will be a lifeline for people in crisis. You will receive specialized training to handle calls from individuals experiencing emotional distress or other mental health challenges. Your role will be to provide support, de-escalate crises, and connect individuals with appropriate resources. This is a chance to make a profound, direct impact in people’s lives, offering compassionate, timely assistance to those who need it most.

Responsibilities:

  • Specialized Crisis Counselor Training : Participate in in-depth training to handle crisis calls for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (Training dates & location TBD).
  • Support crisis call centers by responding to calls, texts, and chats from individuals in crisis.
  • Recruit and train volunteers to expand crisis support services.
  • Community Outreach & Awareness : Support initiatives to raise awareness about the 988 Lifeline and promote mental health advocacy in the community.
  • Collaboration with Mental Health Agencies : Build strong partnerships with local mental health organizations and work together to improve access to mental health services.
  • Assist with grant writing to support mental health activities.
  • Support community events and ongoing mental health initiatives.
  • Participate in AmeriCorps Service Projects : Engage in national and local service projects as part of the AmeriCorps network, contributing to community mental health efforts.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bilingual and proficient in office software (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace).
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills , with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of mental health topics and local resources, or a willingness to learn.
  • Enthusiasm for reducing stigma around mental illness and addiction, with a commitment to advocacy.
  • Cultural competency and respect for diverse populations, with a focus on confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Education Requirement : Associate's degree required.
  • Residency : Must be a permanent U.S. resident.
  • Background Check : Must pass a criminal background check before starting service.

Full-time AmeriCorps Position:

  • 10-month program
  • Commit to 1700 service hours (approximately 40 hours/week)
  • $23,000 stipend , paid biweekly in 22 installments
