Process Mechanical Design Engineer, Cell Manufacturing

What to Expect

Tesla’s Cell Engineering group is looking for a highly motivatedmechanical engineer to work on Dry Electrode manufacturing equipment projectsfor equipment upgrades and new installations globally. This individual shouldbe experienced with mechanical engineering, HVAC system design, piping systemdesign and drafting of mechanical systems. As a Process & Mechanical DesignEngineer you will join a cross-functional project engineering team responsiblefor scope development, concept design, project bidding, detailed design,fabrication drawings and construction/installation of Cell Engineeringmanufacturing equipment projects. 

• This role will develop, scale up and optimizebattery manufacturing equipment, focused heavily on Calendering, Slitting, andCoating equipment at multiple sites. 
• Provide advanced drafting and design servicesby preparing and maintaining construction drawings, facilities layouts, andengineering drawings.
• Produce complex technical drawings includingP&IDs, process flow diagrams, and pipe routing drawings.
• Produce general arrangement drawings formechanical equipment upgrades and new installations.
• Develop simple to mid-level designs/layoutsthrough fabrication level 3D models and spool drawings.
• Prepare designs and bill of material estimatesfrom general instruction.
• Perform Field surveys and develop as-builtdrawings.
• Thoroughly learn and understand existingprocesses and equipment to address ongoing technical challenges and identifystep-change improvement opportunities, including blank-slate concepts.
• Support design, development, andimplementation of equipment modifications, improvements, and next generationtools from proof of concept through to full scale production to enable improvedbattery performance and/or cost.
• Use data analysis tools to interpret andpresent validation data.

• Pipe flow modelling (AFT pipeflow, Aspen, orequivalent)
• Experience with large facility infrastructuredesign (cell manufacturing, semiconductors, Chemical processing facility, etc.)
• Must be proficient in 3D Modeling Software (REVIT,SolidWorks and/or Inventor).
• Must be proficient in 2D Drafting Software(AutoCAD, REVIT)
• Experience with piping system design andfabrication/joining methods
• Experience with HVAC and exhaust system design
• Experience with Process and InstrumentationDiagram design
• Experience with developing specifications
• Knowledge of engineering principles, codes,and standards.
• The ideal candidate should be ready to pushtheir limits, as they join a highly motivated and capable team to makeunbelievable things become reality
• A BS or higher in mechanical engineering,interdisciplinary/integrated engineering, manufacturing engineering, physics,or equivalent is preferred
• 2+ years of mechanical equipment designrequired
• Proven strong understanding of engineeringfundamentals and ability to apply them to equipment design and processdevelopment for high volume manufacturing
• Excellent communication skills, both verbaland written
• Ability to perform basic FEA for designvalidation
• Structured thinking and problem-solvingabilities
• Desire to participatein an exciting team
