Job Description
The Radiation Therapy Assistant supports the Radiation Oncology team by assisting radiation therapists in the daily delivery of radiation therapy services. This role focuses on patient preparation, room setup, equipment readiness, and administrative support to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care.
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Escorts patients to and from radiation therapy treatment areas and supports a calm, organized patient flow.Assists patients with positioning, mobility, and comfort before and after radiation therapy treatments.Observes patients for signs of physical or emotional distress and promptly reports concerns to licensed clinical staff.Provides clear, basic instructions to patients and families related to treatment preparation and transitions.Prepares treatment rooms prior to patient arrival, including equipment setup and supply readiness.Supports radiation therapists during patient setup and treatment preparation under direct supervision.Transports patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, or other mobility devices as needed.Maintains treatment room readiness between patients, including cleaning and restocking supplies per departmental standards.Assists with patient scheduling support, coordination, and overall treatment area workflow.Documents assigned activities and assists with updating patient records under the direction of a radiation therapist.Performs routine clerical and operational tasks, including answering phones, filing, and supply management.Communicates relevant patient, scheduling, or workflow information to radiation therapists and other clinical team members.Adheres to HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality standards.Follows radiation safety guidelines and institutional policies.Participates in quality assurance and safety initiatives.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE, REGISTRATION:
Associate degree or higher from a JRCERT-accredited Radiologic Technology or Radiography program.ARRT (R) registered or registry eligible, with eligibility required to be maintained throughout employment.Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Knowledge of medical terminology relevant to radiologic and radiation oncology services.Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and pathology applicable to radiographic imaging and treatment preparation.Knowledge of radiation physics, radiobiology, and principles of radiation protection.Knowledge of radiologic contrast media and medications routinely used in diagnostic radiology.Knowledge of radiographic image production and processing principles.Skill in applying radiation safety and protection principles during patient preparation and room setup.Skill in communicating with patients to explain procedures and support patient understanding during care transitions.Ability to recognize changes in patient condition or signs of distress and promptly escalate concerns to licensed clinical staff.Ability to operate electronic health records and basic computer systems for documentation and workflow support.Ability to safely assist with patient mobility and transport, including lifting, pushing, and pulling patients and equipment as required.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must interact and communicate both verbally and in written form.Must interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians and other departmental personnel, and outside agencies on a frequent basis while respecting the confidentiality of patient information.
